Karen,
It was an honor to meet you in D.C. before you left for home.  I finally went through my things from the trip and found the card you gave me for Leah's website.  I've read through it and wanted to say that you've done a beautiful job honoring your beautiful daughter.  I was reading your list of things to not say and do say and they make so much sense.  In reading them, I realized that I told you that you were so strong...and you replied that you aren't.  I admit that I find it crazy when people say that to me...especially when they have no idea what it's like to have a child with cancer.  I feel weak and broken most days.  I remember talking with you about that feeling of wanting to run away from it all...but you can't.  I once told my cousin that I felt that way when she said I was "so strong" and she told me that I haven't run away and that takes strength in itself.  You haven't run away either and not only are you still living your life to the best of your ability but you are fighting for children with cancer and telling Leah's story and keeping her spirit alive.  That takes strength.  Sometimes we have to give ourselves more credit.  Although we haven't chosen this path and never would've...we do our best with what we have to face and your daughter is proud of you.  I know she is...because you were clearly a wonderful mother to her and you continue to be a wonderful mother.  I think if you asked your other daughter if she felt proud of you she would say the same.  Thank you for going to D.C.  On behalf of you daughter and behalf of all the children that have, are or are going to fight cancer...thank you.  I will keep checking on Leah's website and praying for her and you and your family.  God bless you.

I followed Leah's story prior to her passing and just wanted you to know that I still think of her and your family.  I have two daughters, ages 5 1/2 and 4 years old, and Leah's story and your experiences definitely touch my heart.  I wish I had the opportunity to meet Leah as I often think of her words "My heart is happy." despite all she endured.  What an inspirational little girl!  Just know you are in our thoughts and prayers out in California.

Please keep her memory strong in the great journal entrys you write

I went to the walk with my mom. I was so touched by her story and I can't even imagine going through that very difficult time. I will continue to pray for you. I hope you accomplish much with this wonderful program.

Karen,

Thanks for the update.  I am so glad you had a wonderful time at Discovery Cove.  We went there last May, a few months after Matthew passed away.  It was a beautiful place and we know that Matthew would have loved it.  While we were there as we were walking along one of the paths, we saw a bunny hop to the sand.  He stopped on the sand and watched us for what seemed like forever (probably a little over a minute), I watched him to see if he would hop away, he didn't.  He just stared at us.  Matthew absolutely loved bunnies and we just knew that it was sign that he was with us that day.

I am glad that your Happy Feet for Happy Hearts walk was such a success.  I really wished I lived closer, it would be wonderful to meet you and your family.

Please know we think of Leah often and will always continue to pray for you and your family to be always comforted.

God Bless.

Rich (Angel Matthew's Dad)
